Second trimester glow or myth? What changes to expect.

Welcome to what’s often called the “honeymoon phase” of pregnancy, the second trimester (weeks 13 to 27).

Second trimester comes around so quick it will feel like 2 blinks and a smile. One minute you’re figuring out how to survive morning sickness, and the next, everyone is telling you how radiant you look. Welcome to what’s often called the “honeymoon phase” of pregnancy, the second trimester (weeks 13 to 27). But is the glow real, or is it just a polite way of saying you finally look less exhausted?

Let’s talk about what really happens during this phase the changes, the myths, and the small joys that make this stage both magical and confusing.

The Famous “Pregnancy Glow”. What’s behind It?

You’ve probably heard people say, “You’re glowing!” and you might even start to believe it when you look in the mirror. The truth is, the glow isn’t magic, it’s biology. Increased blood circulation gives your skin a slightly pinkish tint, while hormones boost oil production, making your face appear more luminous.

However, that same oil can also lead to breakouts for some mamas. So if your “glow” looks more like a teenage flashback, don’t worry it’s completely normal. Moisturize, stay hydrated, and remember that everyone’s pregnancy skin story is different.

Energy returns (Sort Of)

One of the best perks of the second trimester is that your energy starts to bounce back. The crushing fatigue of early pregnancy often eases up as your body adjusts to the hormonal changes. You might actually start feeling like yourself again even crave a little social time or a walk around the estate.

But don’t be fooled; your body is still doing a lot of heavy lifting behind the scenes. Rest when you need to, and don’t guilt-trip yourself if your energy fluctuates. It’s okay to have good days and “sofa + snacks” days.

The bump makes its grand entrance

This is when your baby bump starts to show! Your clothes begin to fit differently, and it might finally feel real that you’re growing a tiny human. For many women, this is when the excitement kicks in buying maternity wear, taking bump photos, and getting compliments from random aunties at the supermarket.

That said, everybody grows differently. Don’t compare your bump to someone else’s. Whether you’re showing early or your bump is taking its sweet time, both are perfectly okay.

Sleep gets a bit tricky

While the nausea may ease up, finding a comfortable sleeping position might become harder. As your belly grows, sleeping on your back may feel uncomfortable, and experts recommend side sleeping, preferably on your left side, to improve blood flow.

A good pregnancy pillow can be your new best friend. And yes, those midnight trips to the loo will still continue (some things just don’t quit!).

Appetite and cravings level up

If you barely touched food in your first trimester, you might now find yourself hungry all the time. The second trimester often brings back your appetite with a vengeance. You’ll crave the most random things from mangoes with chili to githeri at 10 p.m.

Go ahead and enjoy your food, but try to balance your meals with proteins, fruits, veggies, and whole grains. If cravings lean toward the strange (like soil or soap), talk to your doctor — it could be a sign of mineral deficiency.

Emotional shifts and mood balancing

You might notice your emotions are more stable now, but don’t be surprised by the occasional mood swing. Hormones are still running the show. Some moms feel super confident and happy, while others feel anxious about the future.

It helps to share how you’re feeling with your partner, friends, or even your doctor. Joining a support group or following Kenyan mum communities online can also make you feel less alone in the experience.

Feeling those first flutters

Somewhere between weeks 16 and 22, you might feel those first tiny movements, a flutter, a bubble, or a soft tickle deep inside. It’s your baby saying hello! These early movements are one of the most special milestones in pregnancy.

If you don’t feel them right away, don’t panic. Every baby has their own timeline, and soon enough, you’ll be feeling kicks, twists, and full-on gymnastics sessions.

Common changes you might notice

Skin changes: Darkening of the nipples, a faint line (linea nigra) on your belly, or even some pigmentation on your face.

Nasal congestion: Increased blood flow can make your nose stuffy a weird but normal symptom.

Round ligament pain: A sharp or pulling sensation on your lower belly as your uterus stretches.

Hair and nails: You may notice thicker hair and faster-growing nails thanks to hormonal changes.

So whether you’re glowing, sweating, or battling occasional acne, remember your body is performing a miracle every day. The second trimester is your time to breathe, enjoy, and prepare for the next chapter. Eat well, hydrate, rest, move a little, and celebrate your body. Whether your glow is from hormones, happiness, or good lighting you’ve earned every bit of it.
