Welcome to the second trimester Mama! At pregnancy week 13, most of the uncomfortable symptoms such as frequent urination and nausea have died down and you might even start experiencing the famous second trimester glow.

However, every woman experiences pregnancy differently so do not be alarmed if you’re not seeing the same changes. Your antenatal care team from Malaica Maternity Hospital will still walk with you from pregnancy week 13 until delivery and beyond.

Your Baby’s Development at Week 13 of Pregnancy

At 13 weeks pregnant, your little one has got her own unique set of fingerprints. She is about the size of a peach, 6.5 cm long from crown to rump, and weighs about 70 grams. Their body shape is also balancing out as their body grows bigger and the head becomes smaller.

Their abdominal organs have been forming outside their body but from now they’ll begin moving and settling inside their body. Another exciting development milestone this week is that your baby’s vocal chords are beginning to form in preparation for their first cry and the many, including laughters, that follow.

Your Body Changes and Symptoms at Pregnancy Week 13

This week you may notice a difference in the volume and texture of your vaginal discharge. It may now be thick, milk and mild smelling. Relax. This isn’t a symptom of an STI. This discharge is caused by an increase in the production of estrogen and its purpose in your body is to maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in the vagina. An informative take-home tip for this part of your pregnancy is using a pant liner to avoid soiling your panties.

Your uterus has now shifted from below to upwards and forward, which will reduce the frequent urination. However, you might still be struggling with constipation due to the hormones. Ensure you’re drinking enough water, consuming sufficient fibre in your diet, and doing gentle exercises and stretches to stimulate intestinal contractions. Try to stick to natural remedies, especially by adjusting your diet, before turning to medication for constipation.

Emotionally, most women have settled into the pregnancy by week 13, with the high energies returning as you enter into the second trimeter, also known as the honeymoon phase. The hunger pangs might be sharper due to decreased morning sickness but remember, you’re not eating for two, but rather, enough for your health and your baby’s growth.

Pregnancy Week 13 tip: If you haven’t done an ultrasound scan yet, make arrangements to go for this visit together with your partner because it will help him slip into the father role soon enough and to also be a more supportive partner.
