For most Mamas this is the stage in pregnancy that most can describe as “Wueeeh!” Nausea that sneaks up on you in the morning, mid-day, or even at night, because morning sickness doesn’t keep time like a clock anyway, can turn what should be an exciting season into a survival mission.
One moment you’re craving chapati and beans, the next you can’t stand the sight or smell of them. The nausea, vomiting, and food aversions can make it nearly impossible to keep anything down, yet your body and our baby still need nourishment.

First, take a deep breath and understand that you’re not failing at pregnancy. Many women struggle to eat during the early months because of hormones that spike to protect the pregnancy. These same hormones, unfortunately, also play tricks on your stomach. The goal isn’t to force yourself to eat three full meals but to find ways to nourish yourself gently and consistently.
There are simple and practical morning sickness hacks that many expectant mothers have sworn by to ease the queasiness so you can stay nourished.
1. Snack Before You Rise
That empty stomach is one of the biggest triggers of morning sickness. Keep a small pack of crackers, dry bread, or a banana by your bedside. Nibble a little before you even sit up in bed. This small trick stabilizes your blood sugar and helps keep nausea at bay.
2. Ginger Is Your Best Friend (In Moderation!)
From ginger tea to ginger biscuits or even ginger chews, this root has natural properties that soothe the stomach and help calm nausea.
But while ginger is generally safe during pregnancy, taking more than 4 grams a day can increase the risk of bleeding because it may inhibit platelet function. So enjoy it in small, balanced amounts such as a few sips of ginger tea or a piece of ginger candy.
3. Stay Hydrated, But Slowly
Gulping down water all at once can make things worse. Instead, sip small amounts throughout the day.
If plain water tastes “off” or makes you gag, which is a common complaint, try cold infused water with lemon or mint, suck on ice chips, or a splash of fruit juice for flavor.
You can even try hydrating through foods and fruits like watermelon, cucumber, and oranges which are water-rich and easier to tolerate. Coconut water is another gentle way to stay hydrated and replenish electrolytes.
4. Eat Small, But Often
Instead of doing big meals during pregnancy, which can be overwhelming, try breaking them down into mini-meals every 2–3 hours. Try things like crackers, dry toast, plain rice, mashed potatoes, fruits, nuts, yogurt, or light sandwiches. A steady flow of energy keeps your stomach calm and your body nourished.
5. Opt for Cold Foods Over Hot Foods
Sometimes, it’s not the food but the smell that makes you sick. Cold foods often have less odor than hot foods. A cold sandwich, chilled fruit, yogurt, smoothie or overnight oats are great options since they’re cold, light, packed with nutrients and might sit better than a steaming plate of food.
To avoid strong smells from food, you can also let someone else cook or try eating in well-ventilated spaces.
6. Use Lemon Magic
The scent of lemon, or citrus in general, works wonders for many mamas. Sniff on a cut lemon, sip lemon water, or keep lemon-scented wipes handy for when nausea strikes.
8. Avoid Nausea Triggers
Every mama has her own “no-go” foods or smells. For some it’s onions, for others it’s perfumes or fried foods. Learn your triggers and avoid them as much as possible.

7. Rest as Much as You Can
Fatigue can make morning sickness worse. Allow yourself short naps or breaks during the day and don’t feel guilty about it. Remember, your body is working overtime to grow a whole human!
9. Try Acupressure Bands
These wristbands, often sold for motion sickness, apply pressure on specific points and can help reduce nausea. Many expectant mothers find relief using them.
10. Ask for Help if It’s Too Much
If morning sickness becomes extreme with signs such as persistent vomiting, dehydration, or weight loss, don’t brush it off. It could be hyperemesis gravidarum, which needs medical attention. Always talk to your doctor if things feel unbearable.
