Hiring a Birth Doula in Nairobi: What to Expect, Costs and Hospital Support

Illustration of a doula supporting a woman in labour in a hospital setting, with the title Birth Doula Support in Nairobi.

Preparing to give birth in Nairobi? Alongside choosing your hospital and medical team, you may be wondering who will support you through labour. A birth doula can offer an extra layer of personalised care, helping you feel comfortable, reassured and confident as you welcome your baby.

At Malaica Maternity Hospital in Nairobi, we now offer in-hospital doula support that complements the care provided by our midwives and obstetricians.

What does a birth doula do in hospital?

A birth doula focuses on your emotional and physical comfort during labour and birth. Depending on your needs and preferences, your doula may:

  • Guide you through breathing and relaxation techniques.
  • Offer massage, counter-pressure and other comfort measures.
  • Suggest different labour positions and movements.
  • Provide encouragement and reassurance.
  • Help your partner feel involved and supported.

A doula does not replace your midwife or doctor. Instead, they work alongside your medical team, providing personalised support while your clinicians manage your medical care.

New to the idea of doula support? Read our guide to what a doula is and how doulas can support you.

Can a doula support your birth partner too?

Yes. A doula isn’t there to take your birth partner’s place. This can be your husband, life partner, family member, or friend. Instead, they can help you both feel more comfortable and confident during labour.

Your doula may suggest ways your partner can offer comfort, guide them through practical support techniques or provide reassurance when things feel unfamiliar. It’s about working together so everyone feels supported.

For more ideas, explore our article on how partners can help in the delivery room.

Can a doula support you during a C-section?

A doula may also be able to support you if you need a caesarean birth. The type of support available depends on your medical needs, hospital policies and whether access to the operating theatre is permitted.

Your doula can offer reassurance before or after the procedure and support your partner through the experience. Support inside the operating theatre is subject to approval by the medical team.

When should you arrange doula support?

It’s a good idea to explore your options before your due date, giving you time to ask questions, discuss your preferences and understand what to expect.

At Malaica, you can get to know our doula partners through birth preparation classes, dedicated information sessions (Doula Happy Hours), community events or simply by asking our team during a clinic visit. Check our upcoming events for any scheduled doula sessions, or contact our team directly to learn more.

We recommend choosing your preferred doula and completing your booking and payment by week 36 of pregnancy. If your preferred doula is unavailable when labour begins, a backup doula will be there to support you. When you’re admitted to Malaica Maternity Hospital, our team will coordinate with your doula and arrange support as labour progresses.
