Our mission

Our mission is to make pregnancy safe and joyful for millions of women. Our approach to maternal health combines personalised care, hybrid models, advanced technology, and community support to address the high maternal mortality rates in Sub-Saharan Africa. We offer a hybrid care model that includes online support and physical checkups, allowing mothers to receive support from Malaica throughout their pregnancy and delivery.

Malaica was founded by a passionate team of healthcare and tech experts committed to transforming the pregnancy experience for women:

Dr Lorraine Muluka

CEO and Co-Founder

With a Masters in Medicine with a specialisation in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Lorraine has a keen interest in innovating and improving the Kenyan healthcare system and has played key roles in several healthcare startups over the last decade. Her leadership steers Malaica’s mission to provide a seamless blend of expert care and innovative tech solutions.

Pascal Koenig

Co-Founder and Executive Chair

With an educational background in economics, Pascal has helped build three startups in the digital health space. The last one, a women’s health company Ava, supported couples to conceive. Pascal’s financial expertise in tech-driven healthcare systems plays a crucial role in delivering personalised care to mums across Kenya.

Victor Ndegwa

CTO and Co-Founder

Victor, a Computer Science graduate from the University of Nairobi, has been passionate about computers since childhood. He started building software commercially in his teens, starting with a point-of-sale system for a local supermarket. Victor founded several tech companies, including software development consultancies and SaaS businesses. Driven by a desire to improve healthcare systems, he leads Malaica’s tech development, aiming to impact millions of women.

Isis Nyong’o

Co-Founder and Board Member

Isis has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Stanford and an MBA from Harvard. After management roles at Google and MTV, she ventured out to build the largest pregnancy and parenting community in Kenya called MumsVillage which later joined forces with Malaica.

Markus Gemuend

Board Member

Markus is a global healthcare executive. He spent 16 years at Lonza Group Ltd, including as CEO, of the industry-leading CDMO, followed by 18 years at Genentech/Roche, the global leader in biotechnology and personalised healthcare. Among other key roles, Markus was the General Manager of Roche Sub-Saharan Africa. He gets inspired by catalysing new, innovative, disruptive approaches and business models that have the potential to deliver profound impact on customers, societies and economies. This is why he joined Malaica’s board of directors: To redefine how we deliver obstetric care.
